FACES THAT MISSED OUT ON THE BALLOT SHEET!

Ian Sagoe-Sackey- a surprise miss-out
This batch undoubtedly is an active one when it comes to issues pertaining to politics. So it came as no surprise to me when the number of Presidential aspirants for the just ended election shot from the usual two to five aspirants.

Behind such political activeness of the ruling class were some faces that smelled politics inside out…but unfortunately such faces at the point where it disappointedly never surfaced. They dumped our hopes of seeing them vie for office when the time was due.

There is no smoke without fire, they say. So definitely their last minute decisions to bow out or not to even consider affirming our expectations held of them must certainly be borne out of something.
What reasons might have accounted for such missed outs! Monetary, lack of determination or fear of competition, if you really want to know, then follow me through!

The reasons for such missed outs, I would through intuition and rumours reveal to you some reasons a category of the so much obvious faces failed to appear.

AFFUL FIIFI CYRUS

The hand writing on the wall was clear. He definitely came to GIJ poised to lead one day in the capacity of SRC President. From day one, Cyrus went all guns blazing. He started to prime students through his daily motivational pieces pasted at vantage points all around campus.
The very alert minds then quickly who could read through him, made whispery of the guy’s aim of
running for SRC President one day.

He was the type who never let any question in class go unanswered without volunteering an answer. He even at a point in time took it upon himself to run tutorials for course mates cost free.
Cyrus was the CEO for the PR firm set up by his class in level 200. He was even a core member of the GIJ football team then… and I don’t mean a bench warmer.

But what went wrong…according to personal findings, he was actually banned from student’s politics in GIJ. As to who banned him, and for what reason; I can’t tell.
The man who is in the good books of Nana Akua, obviously for his instrumental role played as member of her campaign machinery during elections a year ago, in my perfect description only became a victim of vicarious death.

If you truly want to understand what I mean by victim of vicarious death, then you might want to answer the following questions:

  • Why the quick U-turn from E-voting just a year after it usage
  •    Was he actually banned, and why?

ALORGBE BERNICE

Bernice Alorgbe is the incumbent Information and Press Secretary of Ghana Union of Professional Students.

Mavis Alorgbe unlike Cyrus wasn’t that overt in her ambitious, but all her movements and interest gave her out as been someone nurturing the desire of contesting for the office of a General Secretary one day.

But rumours have it that Bernice played a deadly two camps affair in the previous elections and was even cited as been very instrumental in the alleged rigged elections that finally surfaced at the Accra High Court for adjudication.

This very thing dashed and killed off her very desire to contest the office when time was due I guess.

Her part played according to rumours could have been a perfect recipe for the propaganda machinery of any contender/opposition on any given day.

Even if she did play a part has some people sought to say, it couldn't only be a decision of pitching camp with what she believes in...but not to smear dirt on any one's integrity. She, I can say is not that type of person, though I cannot strictly vouch for her on that.

Another disappointing figure at the office of General Secretary is Ian Sagoe

Ian’s stint at General Assembly was very instrumental. His contributions to the affairs of the house never went unnoticed. His grasp of the GIJ SRC constitution made him a more or less a guide over unconstitutionalities of the House.

His name actually pervaded every committee list at the time.

DZIKUNU RICHARD

But for one or two reasons, in my strongest of opinion, he could have been our President elect by now. But life squeezed and revealed the man within him.

The guy could have qualified as a perfect economist because he made a perfect use of what Economist term Opportunity cost; having to decide between going to Finland and vying for the SRC Presidency. In his words, “there are several better opportunities ahead”

He reminds of a time I had with our current President who point blank once told me, given the chance to travel abroad, he would rather settle for SRC president instead.

Apart from these top three missed outs, the likes of FRANCISCA SAMADJI PADIKIE, JULIUS KOFI SATSI, WISDOM NANA HEDEDZOME and ALLEN, JAMES OMAN KABU, CLARICE all of Journalism and PR classes respectively; at a point in time expressed interest in some of the available offices.

But when it mattered most, those who had the guts showered off what they were made up of.
Remember, before you ever think of making mockery of those tried and lost; don’t forget that there were other capable men and women who never ventured at all.

These brains could have obviously brought their experiences to bear on the affairs of GIJ SRC.

  3. I appreciate your ability to summarize a four year political history into a a palatable dish for the public. However i want to clearly state that not appearing on the ballot sheet is a better way to promote the democracy i have always fought for. This is because my actions guaranteed a fair grounds in the upcoming elections although resorting to court action is something i currently feel could have been properly handled(NO REGRETS). I believe politics is an art which comes with a lot of compromises when one looks at the positive future and the interest of the public.Banned? i was not banned, i became fulfilled after knowing all the elderly people who benefit from the leadership shenanigans and decided to step out for public interest. Coming back to serve as a Sports Commissioner is only to prove to the world that leadership is like pregnancy, you can not hide it when its elements come calling.
Great piece by all standards, prof in making.
