Dr. Arthur Kennedy |
For the benefit
of us who might be in the dark about the personality I have finally resolved to
discuss in this article, I would do a brief, but very comprehensive
introduction.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy is an astute politician of
Ghanaian descent, a lecture at one of Ghana’s renowned universities, the University
of Choice, University of Cape Coast. He is again a ranking member of Ghana’s
largest opposition party, The New Patriotic Party (NPP). He is also an author,
with the publication entitled “chasing the elephant into the bush” to his name.
I must state and
very emphatically that this article is nowhere near a eulogy and therefore must
not be taken as such. Indeed, I have been very hesitant in coming up with this
article, but I belong to the school of thought that as we constantly bemoaned
politicians especially for partisan politics, we ought to in a likewise manner,
acknowledge those who could be termed as “living
above reproach”. And Kennedy is one of those. He is my candid opinion of a
character who owns his thought after taken time monitor him for some time now,
and I think he is second to none if it comes to the issue of objectivity in our nation’s political
dispensations.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy |
He first won a
place in my heart prior to the now alleged compromised Elections 2012 with an
analysis he did on a poll conducted by one of Ghana’ finest when it comes
election polls, Ben Ephson. The said poll was on a constituency located at the
heart of Cape Coast. Though some ranking members of the party he belongs, The
New Patriotic Party (NPP), faulted the said polls and ran it as not a true
representation of the situation on ground, he, Arthur Kennedy, when given the opportunity
by the Pollster on Ephson’s file on Radio XYZ, an Accra based FM station to
critic it never minced his words in affirming the said polls as the reflection
of the reality on the ground.
To me, the Dr.
who has indeed won a place in my heart has proven to be a fellow who can
privately and independently think his way through very critical issues without
minding the toes he might be stepping on, he owns his thoughts I must say. If
he was a parliamentarian, he would have long ago nullify the work of a party
whip, because he has proven beyond all reasonable doubts that tolling party
lines should not always be the case at the expense of the national interest.
No wonder
immediately after his party, the NPP lost elections 2008; he quickly came out
with the publication, “Chasing the elephant into the bush”, a publication which
a section of its readers have Okayed as an explicit representation of the
reasons for the downfall of the NPP in elections 2008. Though a section of his
party still disagrees with him on that he is never the less perturb about it.
The current of
situations which calls for the doffing of hats for this Honourable man is his
disagreement with Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe, a leading member of his party calling for
the removal of the party’s General Secretary, Hon. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie,
affectionately referred to as “Sir John”. His reasons had been that though the actions
of his General Secretary are undeserving of him, others in the past went scot
free for such similar offences. He being the Brave man he has proven to be
didn’t in any way leave his admirers like me in the air, but hit the nail right
on the head with the assertion that, if words like “all die be die” uttered by
no mean a person, but the party’s flag bearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo have
in the past been defended, why call for the head of someone for making a
similar statement. Ouch! I said to myself. “The man has done what Napoleon
could not do”. A bitter bile situation
of a sort.
The Dr.’s bravery and manliness have only given birth
to a new definition of objectivity. One which is not the mere neutrality we
have limited it to, but speaking to the issue even if such views contrasts your
personal interest.
With characters
like him involve in the politics of our dear nation Ghana, there is definitely
the trust that it is not all politicians as it always assumed have sold their
conscious to the parochial interests of their political parties to the
detriment of the nation they always dream to rule. By this act of bravery, the
honourable Dr. Arthur Kennedy has definitely sent a strong signal to the
thousands who doubts whether there is really a saint in politics.
DR. may God
bless your good thought for Ghana. Thousands may disagree with you for not
taking to the paths they have taken to, but tens like me would always stand by
you. Keep up the good work!
