The contemporary church and the maxim “If you go, more will come”

I sat in worship yesterday, and this was all what I took home…“If you go, more will come” and to be frank with you, the Pastor never minced words. This point to me that, he/she was very serious with what he/ she said.

After my curious interrogations of some members after service, it became apparent that, the led pastor’s rage was in response to people leaving the church time and time again.

And in what appeared to be a rather cynical way of reminding the remaining congregation of his lack of fear to lose more, the assertion was made “if you go, more will come!”

In the wisdom pertaining to the businesses of this world, the above assertion might be cogent. But in the business of the kingdom, it is a misplaced priority.

The fact is there are a number of employees out there, who are always deceiving themselves of their indispensability. Believing that in their absence, certain businesses they are affiliated to can’t survive.

And these are the very people I believe, if am even the owner of such a firm, I wouldn’t hesitate to tell right in the face; if you go, more are likely to take up your responsibility and even perform better.

Why because, I can’t toil to bring a firm to live and certain nobodies from nowhere should battle me for the right of shot calling.

But what we ought to know as Minister’s and people of God is this, the business of the kingdom is no man’s business but the father’s (Luke 2:49).

“And He said to them, why did you seek me? Did you not know that I must about my father’s business?”

I am not suggesting that we condone the deviant attitude of the today’s contemporary Christian. Yeah! I believe some of us Christians are of an obstinate character.
But it only goes to tell that, we are yet to claim the level of devoutness others have attained.

Therefore a bit of patience with us wouldn’t be a demand, too much.

I believe what the contemporary Church leader ought to learn from is the customer care attitude portrayed by Jesus Christ, when he was confronted by some of these attitudes during his ministerial stint.

When his disciples tried barring the little children from coming to him, he protested.

When Pharisees were bent on stoning that prostitute to death, he gave them a reason not to.

These scenarios might not be fittingly comparisons to make.

But what I am driving at is the fact that, those were the troubles He Jesus had to contend with in his ministerial journeys and he did rise to them.

Therefore we also have to assume the unpleasant attitude of our church today, and more so, see it as our own version of what Jesus had to contend with during his era.

The sad reality is that, the contemporary church leader I think is vying to be a Jesus in contrast. But Paul the Apostle has this passion filled advice for us, “imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ” (1st Corinthians 4:16, 11:1),

Instead of justifying why, the member should leave while we look on unconcern… we should rather look for that single reason why we must get them to remain. This is what I believe Jesus will do.

If at all we care to know, people are not leaving at will. People have decided to become church infidels because; the church has failed to be the home as it was described before they came in.

Our focus and strength have to be channeled into bringing the church back to its lost home.

The church is a citadel of salvation. And it trades not only in sending the gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost, but also, in keeping and making profit of more souls with the lost gained. (Acts1: 8).This the essence to which he commissioned the twelve disciples.

The twelve in making relevance of basic profit maximization principle ploughed back the souls they won in the early church times. This brought many saints like Philip, Stephen, Mathias, Paul and it has continued to the now contemporary church times.

“Which of you would lead a flock of sheep to graze and lose one and not go after it?

We ought to jealously guide the church like the democratic politician, who believing that, democratic politics is about numbers wouldn’t rest to see a member of his followership leave.
